Landscape painter and engraver. Birth date given as both 1836 and 1837. Munger worked early in his career as an engraver for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Later he painted many scenes of Niagara Falls, Venice, and the Barbizon country of France. He lived many years in Paris before returning to the U.S. in 1893. George Benjamin Chittenden was born in Conn. in Dec. 1849. A graduate of Yale University, he worked as a topographer for the U. S. Geological and Geographic Survey of the Territories conducted by Ferdinand V. Hayden in Colo. and Wyo. (1873-1877). Known as the Hayden Survey, the surveys helped define the Western U.
